Genuine Leather vs Vegan or Faux Leather

One of the most common questions we receive is whether vegetable-tanned leather is the same as vegan leather or “veg leather.” The answer is no.

• Vegetable-tanned leather: Authentic animal leather treated with natural plant extracts. It is biodegradable, long-lasting, and develops a unique character with age.
• Vegan or faux leather: Synthetic material made from plastics such as polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). While it may be marketed as sustainable or eco-friendly, it cannot replicate the natural patina, strength, or longevity of genuine leather.

At Thinkthankay, we carefully source genuine vegetable-tanned leather from Italy, other parts of Europe, and the United States. Many of our Italian hides are produced by tanneries accredited by the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale, an organization dedicated to preserving sustainable and traditional leather tanning practices.
